100 words: "Contrast" & "Silver"
01/27/2007
Contrast

She dreams of nuclear winter and sketches in the lunchroom. The first week of the semester she starts seeing him again. He eats faster when he notices her. The Bible has returned to his side--a leather bound funeral for their spring. She’d unbuttoned his shirt; he’d asked to bring her hand to his heart. His bible stayed on the shelf. All spring she drew him in delicate shadings: the cleft in his chin, the lift of his clavicle. His edges were indistinct so she drew him in graphite. This new definition, she supposes, is better conveyed in ink.

Silver

I could just melt it down again; no one asks where they go. The portfolio evaluation is only for the students continuing to lapidary, and I’ve insisted on a grade for each completed project before starting the next. The ring’s band is luminious. All the seams filed out. You’ll wear it for years, Cindy said, not aware she was holding the “striking” earrings and the “ambitious” torque bracelet, too. The ring glows in my palm. I long for years, but if I want the next check, I need the right letter. And, after all, no one asks where they go.

the word for the 29th was "haunted," and the word for the 30th is "revelation."

these two, in their vagueness and specificness, are brilliant.

judith ann, queen of vague specifications. ;-)

were you able to tell what the gentleman's book was? it's obvious to me because this was harvested out of a long ago incomplete short story, but, you know, not everyone has read through my random incomplete short stories as often as i have.

this is the silver you were worried about? i almost like it more than contrast. almost? or definitely? or maybe they're just different. silver is so... deceptively concentrated. like a single, short moment that is somehow more full than it seems, or is symbolic of a much larger moment. i don't know what i'm saying. how about instead,

"what nica said."

that's the silver. stuffing the idea of a young artist forced to destroy her best work to get a scholarship check into such a tiny space wasn't going so well before you left, but it eventually clicked, i just had to keep letting go.

a lot of the time, though, if i'm really unhappy with the way something is going, i'll just scrap it and start over (like 'howl.') it's an advantage in this format, i think; i can give up on something without loosing days and days of effort.
