Contrast
She dreams of nuclear winter and sketches in the lunchroom. The first week of the semester she starts seeing him again. He eats faster when he notices her. The Bible has returned to his side--a leather bound funeral for their spring. She’d unbuttoned his shirt; he’d asked to bring her hand to his heart. His bible stayed on the shelf. All spring she drew him in delicate shadings: the cleft in his chin, the lift of his clavicle. His edges were indistinct so she drew him in graphite. This new definition, she supposes, is better conveyed in ink.

Silver
I could just melt it down again; no one asks where they go. The portfolio evaluation is only for the students continuing to lapidary, and I’ve insisted on a grade for each completed project before starting the next. The ring’s band is luminious. All the seams filed out. You’ll wear it for years, Cindy said, not aware she was holding the “striking” earrings and the “ambitious” torque bracelet, too. The ring glows in my palm. I long for years, but if I want the next check, I need the right letter. And, after all, no one asks where they go.
