new art
so as it turns out, i've been gravitating toward sculpture, something i never thought would happen: i've always been a creature of the paper arts.

this piece evolved from my cathartic box mangling incident on friday. the link below the picture will take you to more shots--and also pictures of the curio box i recently sanded/stained and arranged for our coffee table (that's not so much art as a warm-up exercise, but since most of my projects seem to be shrines, i see fit to include it in that flickr set.) the link on the picture will take you to my flickr account, if you haven't seen it.

there seems to be an initiatory & healing element to this process, which is significantly more of a surprise for me than it probably is for you.

I love it! I also liked the anatomy lesson comment on one of the last pics, as that was already going through my mind while looking at the pictures.

thank you, b. i'm happy that it ended up coming together so nicely.

i actually have a button that says "IT'S CALLED A VULVA," but i'm not brave enough to actually wear it anywhere. ;-)

I lovelovelove everything about it, J. It's as if Georgia O'Keefe spent the summer hiking, picking up pebbles and shells, and then made a box for her treasures.

thank you, c! coyote always used to tell people i kept river stones on my windowsill just like georgia o'keefe, so that comparison has special significance for me.

I really like that, especially when I saw the scale of it. And I really want a nice shadow box, that's beautiful.

You might like some of his boxes/sculptures: http://www.garyreef.com/ (go to 'galleries' and then 'assemblage and secret boxes')

man, if i still lived in illinois i'd so be halfway to hob lob (the name of which i'm intentionally abbreviating because i'm tired of random spammers searching by company name) to see if i could score one for your birthday. apparently there's going to be one in... chambersburg, PA? but the one i used to go to, it was just a few miles from my house. that box i keep my bpal in, that was also an unfinished HL score... also under $5, if i'm remembering correctly.

i had this whole conspiracy theory around hob lob and underselling natural resources, at one point. i'll have to tell you about it sometime.

i do indeed like his boxes and sculptures! also, i'm excited that everyone didn't immediately start comparing it to joseph cornell... i'm not going to be that lucky when i post pics of ben's present in the near future. :-)

I hear stories about this Hob Lob from my midwest friends, but have never actually seen one. If they have pretty boxes for under $5, they should migrate quicker. But I should probably hear your theory before hoping for that.

Even knowing about our mutual love for Cornell, he did not jump to mind when I saw this. It's quite distinct!

it looks like it's hiding a secret, and the stain is gorgeous.
selva oscuraanonymousblack on September 17th, 2009 02:05 am (UTC)
thank you. i see secrets, i see knotholes for owls, and, of course, i see a baby crowning.

the stain is mostly "colonial maple." it's the same color as what ended up on the curio box, actually, that you can also see in that set--they look dramatically different in person, though, must be the wood. there's also some "deep mahogany" in there, to pronounce details.
